California Cedar Products Company (Cal Cedar) was founded in 1917 in Stockton (California/USA), a family business dedicated to the manufacture of flat, rectangular strips of California incense cedar wood, which they sold to the pencil industry.
In 1968, looking for a way to recycle the large volume of sawdust by-product that was produced, they developed a mixture of sawdust with petroleum wax and invented an extruder specially designed for the manufacture of a new fuel for fireplaces, with a cleaner combustion compared to firewood, thus firelog was born.
In 1970, Cal Cedar created California Cedar Firelog Inc. as a separate subsidiary, thus incorporating the firewood business. But it wasn't until a year later, in 1971, that the name was changed to Duraflame Inc., revolutionizing the market with its wax-coated logs.
