The pencils are illustrated by Rilakkuma the bear and his friends: the white bear Korilakkuma, the smallest and brownest little bear, Chairoikoguma, and the chick Kiiroitori.

Rilakkuma and his friends first appeared in 2003, in a series of picture books called Rilakkuma Seikatsu (lit. Rilakkuma's Lifestyle ) produced by San-X, but have since become just as popular as plush toys, tableware, backpacks and stationery.

It is a soft, toy-like bear whose interests are mostly limited to eating and sleeping, though these traits are portrayed positively, encouraging fans and consumers to occasionally imitate Rilakkuma as a way to relieve stress.
