It was in 1662 that Friedrich Staedtler freed his ideas from all conventions. Going against the advice of the Nuremberg Council, he began manufacturing both the leads and the casings for pencils. In doing so, he eliminated the separation between lead production by pencil makers and wood production by carpenters.
