In the summer of 1929, the newly formed Golden Gate Bridge and Highway District hired Joseph B. Strauss to complete a task many said was impossible: building a bridge across the choppy waters of the Golden Gate Strait. He and his team of engineers, designers, and planners used pencil and paper to develop the sketches, design drafts, and final plans that would become the Golden Gate Bridge.
When the Golden Gate Bridge opened on May 27, 1937, it was the longest suspension bridge in the world. It measured 1.7 miles long, with a main span of 4,200 feet and two 746-foot towers supporting the structure at each end. The innovative engineering techniques used to build the bridge have allowed it to withstand hurricane-force winds, raging ocean currents, and the rumblings of the nearby San Andreas Fault.
The Blackwing 746 is a tribute to the Golden Gate Bridge and other engineering marvels of the modern world. Each pencil features a firm (2B) graphite core and is finished with a special multi-layering technique to highlight the iconic international orange color of San Francisco's famous Marvel Comics.
