It began as the "Joseph Dixon Crucible Company" (Joseph Dixon: 1799-1869) with its main manufacturing center in Jersey City, New Jersey. Dixon was an inventor who received patents in 1850 for the use of graphite crucibles in the manufacture of ceramics and steel.
In 1873, the company purchased the American Graphite Company located in Ticonderoga, New York, and in 1913 began incorporating the name into its brand as "Dixon Ticonderoga." In 2005, Dixon Ticonderoga was acquired by FILA, based in Italy.
