At the time of Dixon's death in 1869, the Joseph Dixon Crucible Company was the world's largest manufacturer of graphite products. By 1872, the Dixon Crucible Company was producing 86,000 pencils per day.
In 1873, the company purchased the American Graphite Company located in Ticonderoga, New York, and in 1913 began incorporating the name into its brand as "Dixon Ticonderoga." In 2005, Dixon Ticonderoga was acquired by FILA, based in Italy.
